Sweater Pilling 101: Why It Happens and How to Care for Your Favorite Knits

Sweater Pilling 101: Why It Happens and How to Care for Your Favorite Knits

If you live in sweaters as much as we do, you’ve probably noticed those little fuzzy balls that sometimes show up after a few wears. That’s pilling, and while it may look frustrating, it’s actually a very normal part of owning high-quality knitwear. The good news? With the right care, your favorite wool sweaters can look beautiful for years, even decades, to come.

What Is Sweater Pilling?

Sweater pilling happens when loose fibers on the surface of a knit rub together and tangle into small balls. This friction can come from everyday movement like underarms, sleeves, seatbelts, or even your favorite crossbody bag. Softer, natural fibers like wool and cashmere are more prone to pilling because they are finer and more delicate, especially when a sweater is brand new.

Important to know: pilling is not a sign of poor quality. In fact, many premium wool sweaters pill because they are made from soft, lofty fibers designed for warmth and comfort. Over time, pilling often decreases as shorter fibers naturally shed.

Why Wool Sweaters Are Worth It

Wool is one of nature’s most impressive materials. It is breathable, temperature-regulating, odor-resistant, and incredibly durable when cared for properly. Wool sweaters do not need frequent washing, and airing them out between wears is often enough. This not only helps prevent pilling but also extends the life of the garment. Less washing means less friction, and less friction means happier fibers.

How to Prevent Pilling on Sweaters

While no sweater is completely pill-proof, a few thoughtful habits go a long way in minimizing pilling:

  • Wash less often. Wool sweaters can typically be worn multiple times before washing.

  • Turn sweaters inside out before washing to reduce surface friction.

  • Use cold water and a gentle wool detergent, either by hand or on a delicate cycle.

  • Avoid overloading the washing machine, which causes garments to rub against each other.

  • Skip the dryer. Heat and tumbling stress fibers, so always lay flat to air dry.

  • Rotate your sweaters so the same piece is not worn day after day.

How to Remove Pilling the Right Way

If pilling does appear, don’t worry. It is easy to fix. A sweater comb or fabric shaver gently removes pills without damaging the knit. Lay your sweater flat, keep the fabric taut, and lightly glide the tool over pilled areas. This quick refresh keeps your sweater looking polished and new, season after season.

How to Store Sweaters Properly

Storage matters more than you might think. Always fold sweaters instead of hanging them to prevent stretching at the shoulders. Make sure sweaters are clean and fully dry before storing, and keep them in a cool, dry place. For wool sweaters, breathable cotton storage bags and natural moth repellents like cedar or lavender help protect your knits during the off-season.
